Reading Comprehension A They say procrastination (拖延) is the thief of time — actually deadlines are. New research has found that if you want someone to help you out with something, it is best not to set a deadline at all. But if you do set a deadline, make it short. Professor Stephen Knowles tested the effect of deadline length on task completion for their research.Participants were invited to complete an online survey concerning a charity donation. They were given either one week, one month, or no deadline to respond. Professor Knowles says although the topic of the survey is about charity, the results are true of any situation where someone asks another person for help. The study found responses to the survey were lowest for the one-month deadline and highest when no deadline was specified. No deadline and the one-week deadline led to many early responses, while a long deadline appeared to give people permission to procrastinate, and then forget. Professor Knowles wasn't surprised to find that specifying a shorter deadline increased the chances of receiving a response compared to a longer deadline. However, he did find it interesting that they received the most responses when no deadline was specified. "We interpret this as evidence that specifying a longer deadline, as opposed to a short deadline or no deadline at all, removes the urgency to act," he says. "People therefore put off undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive or forget, postponing it results in lower response rates." He says of the research that it is possible that not specifying a deadline might still have led participants to assume that there is an unspoken deadline. Professor Knowles hopes his research can help reduce the amount of procrastinating people do. "Many people procrastinate. They have the best intentions of helping someone out, but just do not get around to doing it." 1. Why did Professor Knowles do the research? A.To study the role a deadline plays in procrastination. B.To find out whether people are interested in charity. C.To attract public attention to the effects of procrastination. D.To test the effect of procrastination on task completion. 2. What most likely leads to procrastination? A.No deadlines. B.Short deadlines. C.Specific deadlines. D.Long deadlines. 3. What' s the attitude of Professor Knowles to the findings of the study? A.Interested. B.Conservative. C.Confused. D.Unsurprised. 4. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A.Procrastination — the Thief of Time B.Procrastination — the Urgent Problem to Solve C.Deadline — the Key to Reducing Procrastination D.Deadline — a Result of Procrastination

B "I' m going to bed earlier tomorrow!" But no matter how we decide, there are still many chances that we break our promises. This behavior is called "bedtime procrastination(睡眠拖延症)", and results from being short of self-control and our body clock. Bedtime procrastination is a common problem. According to a study, among 2400 people, 53 percent of them couldn' t follow their sleeping time they had planned, delaying it at least twice a week. They delayed bedtime not that they liked to stay up late, but that they couldn' t stop doing some other things. Accordingly, people who usually have trouble resisting temptations ( 诱惑) and adhering to their intentions are more likely to delay going to bed. However, scientists think being short of self-control is not the only problem. Our body clock also plays an important role in terms of bedtime. n order to check the influence of the body clock on sleep, scientists studied the sleep patterns of 108 people. It was found that those who got up late were more likely to delay their bedtime than those who woke up early every morning. And more surprisingly, night owls(夜猫子) would go to bed late at the very beginning of the weekday, even though they had to get up early for work or school. It's their special body clock that plays a part in delaying their bedtime. People always think that bedtime procrastination isn't a big problem, but the choices we make that affect our sleep could finally be pretty important for our health. 1. Bedtime procrastination is likely to happen because of______ . A.being short of self-control and our body clock B.resisting temptations C.adhering to our intentions D working hard 2.According to the study, bedtime procrastination is a common problem because_______ . A.all people like to stay up late B.people have no trouble going to bed C.over 50% of people couldn't sleep on time D.people are night owls 3.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true? A.People who got up late were more likely to delay their bedtime. B.People who woke up early might not delay their bedtime. C.Night owls always got up late. D.Night owls might delay their bedtime due to their special body clock. 4. The writer implies that bedtime procrastination ______. A.is not a big problem B.has no influence on our body C.is the choice we make D.is harmful 5.The passage mainly talks about _________. A.why we delay our bedtime B.the damage bedtime procrastination causes C.a study of bedtime procrastination D.a common phenomenon

C Our quarrel with efficiency is not that it gets things done, but that it is a thief of time when it leaves us no leisure to enjoy ourselves, and that it strains our nerves when we try to get things done perfectly. In building bridges, American engineers calculate so finely and exactly as to make the two ends come together within one-tenth of an inch. But when two Chinese begin to dig a tunnel from both sides of a mountain both come out on the other side. --The Chinese's firm belief is that it doesn't matter so long as a tunnel is dug through, and if we have two instead of one, why, we have a double track to boot. The pace of modern industrial life forbids this kind of glorious and magnificent idling. But, worse than that, it imposes upon us a different conception of time as measured by the clock and eventually turns the human being into a clock himself. (This sort of thing is bound to come to China, as is evident, for instance, in the case of a factory of twenty thousand worker. The luxurious prospect of twenty thousand workers coming in at their own sweet pleasure at all hours is, of course, somewhat terrifying.)Nevertheless, such efficiency is what makes life so hard and full of excitement. A man who has to be punctually at a certain place at five o'clock has the whole afternoon from one to five ruined for him already. Every American adult is arranging his time on the pattern of the schoolboy - three o'clock for this, five o'clock for that, six-thirty for change of dress, six-fifty for entering the taxi, and seven o'clock for arriving at the destination. It just makes life not worth living. 1. The writer objects to efficiency mainly on the grounds that it ____. A) entitles us to too much leisure time B) urges us to get things done punctually C) deprives us of leisure time D) imposes on us a perfect concept of time 2. In the eyes of the author, the introduction of industrial life gives rise to ____. A) the excitement of life B) magnificent idling of time C) more emphasis on efficiency D) terrifying schoolboy 3. The passage tells us ____. A) Chinese workers come to work when it is convenient B) all Americans are forced to be efficient against their will C) Chinese engineers are on better terms with the management D) Americans ought not to work so hard for efficiency 4. The author believes that relaxing the rule of punctuality in factories would lead to ____. A) great confusion B) increased production C) a hard and exciting life D) successful completion of a tunnel 5. What is implied but NOT stated by the author is that ____. A) every American is arranging his time in the pattern of a schoolboy B) every American is reluctant to be efficient C) every one should have some time to spend as he pleases D) being punctual is an undesirable habit which should not be formed
