判断题 And now for the Cutting Edge: our series on the latest advances in modern medicine. It takes just seconds for a stroke to destroy the millions of brain cells you need to speak, to move or to lead a life as you know it. And it strikes someone every 45 seconds at all ages. But this morning, new hope for those on the road to recovery. Our brain is our command center of thoughts, language, movement, billions and billions of synapses working together, but one tiny clot stops it cold, shutting down the vital blood flow, and causing brain cells to die. For the millions who struggle after a stroke, there's hope from surprising places. The Doyle family was badly in need of hope six years ago, when Shawn, an active-driven vice president of sales, suffered a stroke at only 46. "He was paralyzed totally on his right side, so we've come a long, long way!" Susan said. Speech is still a problem. Shawn understands everything, but learning to get the words out has been difficult. But he's got some help from this device called an electromagnetic articulograph (电磁发音仪). Here is how it works. The helmet around his head creates a magnetic field that, along with sensors on the tongue, allows the patients to see their own tongue movements on a computer screen in real time, and adjust those movements until they make the correct sounds. X marks the spot where the tongue must hit. "What we can do is to have him hit the bull's eye—the exact place of articulation (分节发音) in his mouth that he is supposed to hit to make the sounds correctly," Dr. William Katz said. The device has only been tested on a handful of patients so far. But even in these early stages of research, it has given the Doyle family an incredible gift. "Our daughter's name is Cristin and after the stroke, he would always say, 'Crispin,' He couldn't say the 'T.' After working on this he could say 'Cristin' again. And I know that is a little bitty, but it's a big deal," Susan said. 4. Shawn was partially paralyzed on his right side, so speech became difficult for him
